Strike History in Kolkata
All of us, especially the people of West Bengal, are very familiar with the word 'Strike'. Although its use has been seen very rarely lately, in the last few decades, our state has gained a lot of notoriety due to over-application of this strike.I know everyone knows all this,but how many of us know the history of the first strike in Calcutta.Let's take a look at that.
Background of strike
About 200 years ago today, in 1827, the first strike took place in the heart of Calcutta and was called by the palanquin carriers. At that time, the palanquin was an important means of communication.The palanquin was the vehicle of everyone from Bengali Babu to Englishman and it was carried by Bengali and Non-Bengali carriers.
So,at that time a degree was issued by the Calcutta Police that from now on the palanquins would have to register, and each of them would be given a license number. But they were not ready to accept the order issued by Calcutta Police.They did not agree to this decision mainly due to class discrimination and low wages.In protest, they announced a palanquin strike.
About 1000 palanquin bearers joined the strike on May 21, 1827. The people of Kolkata had to suffer a lot in that strike. However, no compromise was made with the decision of the government at that time.Instead, a new vehicle 'Horse carriage' took place in the road of Kolkata with help of Mr. Brownlow.
Thus the first transport strike in the heart of Calcutta failed but gave birth to a new transport system.

আমরা সকলেই বিশেষ করে পশ্চিমবঙ্গবাসী 'ধর্মঘট' শব্দটার সঙ্গে খুব পরিচিত।ইদানিংকালে যদিও এর প্রয়োগ খুব কম দেখা গেছে,কিন্তু বিগত কয়েক দশকে এই ধর্মঘটের অতিপ্রয়োগে আমাদের রাজ্যের দূর্নাম যথেষ্ট হয়েছে।শুধু তাই নয় এর জন্য শিল্প প্রসারও বিশেষ গড়ে ওঠেনি।এসবই আমরা কম-বেশী জানি,কিন্তু আমরা কজন জানি এই কলকাতায় প্রথম ধর্মঘটের ইতিহাস।আসুন একটু আমরা সেদিকে নজর দি ।
আজ থেকে প্রায় ২০০ বছর আগে ১৮২৭ সালে কলকাতার বুকে প্রথম ধর্মঘট হয়েছিল এবং তা ডেকেছিল পাল্কিবাহকেরা।সে সময় পালকি ছিল যোগাযোগের এক গুরুত্বপূর্ণ মাধ্যম।সেই পালকি বাঙাল বাবু থেকে ইংরেজ সাহেব সকলেরই বাহন ছিল এবং তা বহন করতো বাঙালি-অবাঙালী বাহকেরা ।
তো সেই সময় কলকাতা পুলিশের পক্ষ থেকে ফরমান জারি করা হলো যে এবার থেকে পাল্কীবাহকেদের রেজিস্ট্রেশন করতে হবে,এবং তাদের প্রত্যেককে একটা লাইসেন্স নম্বর দেওয়া হবে।এই ফরমান নিয়েই তাদের আপত্তি ছিল।মূলত শ্রেণী বৈষম্য ও অল্প পারিশ্রমিকের কারণে তারা এই সিদ্ধান্ত মানতে রাজী হলো না।প্রতিবাদস্বরূপ তারা পাল্কী ধর্মঘটের ঘোষণা করে বসলো।
প্রায় ১০০০ পাল্কীবাহক ২১-মে, ১৮২৭ সালে এই ধর্মঘটের সামিল হয়েছিল।তাদের সেই ধর্মঘটে কোলকাতাবাসীকে ভালোই ভুগতে হয়েছিল।যদিও তাতে তৎকালীন সরকারী সিদ্ধান্তের কোনও আপস করা হয়নি।পরিবর্তে এক নতুন বাহনের জন্ম হয় কলকাতার বুকে ব্রাউনলো সাহেবের হাত ধরে।কলকাতার বুকে যাত্রা শুরু হয় জুড়িগাড়ীর জয়যাত্রা।
এইভাবে কলকাতার বুকে প্রথম পরিবহন ধর্মঘট ব্যর্থ হয়েও নতুন এক পরিবহন ব্যবস্থার জন্ম দিয়েছিলো।
