Unwanted Nail House

'Nail house' or 'thorn house' is our topic today. Many people may wonder how a house can be a thorn. In fact, this definition has come from China. According to the Chinese administration, the attitude of the owners of these houses is much like a barber's nail fastened to a wooden plank.Just as the barber's nail cannot be removed at all, nor can it be completely hammered. Their existence carries the discomfort of thorns.

 

There are such barbed nail houses in many countries of the world, but China is the first country to add this phrase to their vocabulary. One such nail house in China made headlines recently. The owner of the 430-square-foot home was asked by the administration to leave the site and move to a government-designated house elsewhere to build a highway and flyover.But the owner of the house was reluctant to leave. After a lawsuit had been settled for almost 10 years, the administration was forced to save the house and complete the construction of flyovers on both sides.

Not only China, but Scott Hall farm house in Britain can get the first place in the list of such nail houses. The house was built in the 18th century. Two 3 lane roads have gone on both sides of the house.

Another such house was found in Washington, D.C. which was later lost in the middle of two multi-storey buildings, but the homeowner is reluctant to leave, despite receiving about 15 times the current price of the house.

After all, it would be not justified if not mention about such a heritage house in Kolkata itself. The house was once belonged to the famous playwright Girish Chandra or Girish Bhavan near Bagbazar Crossing and Girish Avenue in North Kolkata.The administration has left the house intact and paved two roads on either side of it.Though the house looked to be a obstruction but the aspect was different.

কাঁটা বাড়ী,অগ্রগতির কাঁটা 

'নেল হাউস' বা 'কাঁটা বাড়ী ' হলো আজকের আমাদের আলোচ্য বিষয়।অনেকেরই মনে প্রশ্ন জগতে পারে যে বাড়ী কীভাবে কাঁটা হতে পারে।আসলে এই সংজ্ঞাটি এসেছে চীন দেশ থেকে।সেখানে যে সকল বাড়ীগুলো দেশের উন্নয়নের পথে বাঁধা সেই সকল বাড়িকেই এ নামে ডাকা হয়।চীন দেশের প্রশাসনের ব্যাখ্যা অনুযায়ী এই সকল বাড়ীর মালিকদের মনোভাব অনেকটা কাঠের তক্তায় বেঁধা বেয়ারা পেরেকের মতন।বেয়ারা পেরেকটিকে যেমন একেবারে তুলে ফেলা যায় না,আবার হাতুড়ী মেরে পুরোপুরি বসিয়ে দেওয়াও যায় না।কাঁটার মতন অস্বস্তি বহন করে তাদের অস্তিত্ব।  

এই রকম কাঁটা বাড়ী পৃথিবীর অনেক দেশেই আছে,তবে চীনই প্রথম দেশ যেখানে এই শব্দবন্ধটি তাদের শব্দভাণ্ডারে যুক্ত করেছে।চীনের এইরকমই একটি নেল বাড়ী সম্প্রতি খবরের শিরোনামে।হাইওয়ে এবং উড়ালপুল বানানোর জন্যে ৪৩০ বর্গফুটের বাড়ীর মালিককে প্রশাসনের তরফ থেকে জায়গাটি ছেড়ে অন্যত্র সরকারের দেওয়া নির্ধারিত বাড়ীতে চলে যেতে বলা হয়েছিল।কিন্তু বাড়ীর মালিক সেটি ছাড়তে নারাজ।প্রায় ১০ বছর ধরে মামলা চলার পরেও কোনো নিস্পত্তি না হওয়ায় বাধ্য হয়ে প্রশাসন বাড়ীটিকে বাঁচিয়ে রেখে তার দুই পাশ দিয়ে উড়ালপুল নির্মাণ সম্পন্ন করেন।

শুধু চিনই নয়,এরকম নেল বাড়ীর তালিকায় ব্রিটেনের স্কট হল খামার বাড়ী প্রথম স্থান পেতেই পারে।বাড়ীটি নির্মিত হয়েছিল ১৮শো শতকে।বাড়ীর দুইপাশ দিয়ে ৩ লেনের দুটি রাস্তা চলে গেছে।

আমেরিকার ওয়াশিংটনতেও এরকম আরও একটি বাড়ীর সন্ধান পাওয়া গেছে,যা দুটি বহুতলের মাঝখানে পরে প্রায় হারিয়ে গেছে তবু বাড়ীর মালিক বাড়ীটির বর্তমান দামের প্রায় ১৫ গুন্ অর্থ পেয়েও  সেটি ছাড়তে নারাজ। 

সবশেষে আমাদের খোদ কলকাতাতেই একটি ঐতিহ্যবাহী বাড়ী কথা না উল্লেখ করলে ভুল হবে।বাড়ীটি হলো উত্তর কলকাতার বাগবাজার ক্রসিং ও গিরিশ এভেন্যুইয়ের কাছে নাট্যকার গিরিশ চন্দ্রের বাড়ী বা গিরীশ ভবন।যদিও এক্ষেত্রে বাড়ীর মালিকের অনমনীয়তার কোনো ব্যাপার নেই কারণ বাড়ীটি সরকারের অধীনস্ত।এককালে রাস্তা চওড়া করার জন্যে প্রশাসন বাড়ীটিকে অক্ষত রেখে তার দুপাশ দিয়ে দুটি রাস্তা বের করা হয়েছে।
