The word quarantine is a burning horror for us today. কোয়ারেন্টাইন শব্দটা আজকে আমাদের কাছে এক জ্বলন্ত বিভীষিকা।বিশেষ করে যখন গেল বছরের কোবিদ-১৯ এর স্মৃতি আমাদের কাছে বেশ সজীব।এই কোয়ারেন্টাইন আতঙ্ক আমাদের দেশের সাধারণ জনগণের জীবনযাত্রাকে একেবারে ছন্নছাড়া করে তুলেছে যার রেশ এই ২০২১-তেও চলছে।কিন্তু জানলে অবাক হবেন যে এই কোয়ারেন্টাইন বা ঘরবন্দী দশা এই প্রথম নয়,আজ থেকে প্রায় ৩৫০ বছর আগে ইংল্যান্ডের ইয়াম নামক গ্রামে দেখা গিয়েছিলো ।আসুন তার এক ঝলক দেখে নি।
তবে এই কোয়ারেন্টীনের জন্য দায়ী ছিল প্লেগ নামক এক মহামারী রোগের সংক্রমণ যা মূলতঃ এক বেক্টেরিয়াজনিত রোগ ও যার বাহক ছিল ইঁদুর।ইতিহাসের সঙ্গে সামান্য পরিচয় থাকলে আমরা সকলেই জেনেছি যে সে সময় প্লেগ কী ভয়ানক আকার ধারণ করেছিল ইংল্যান্ডে ও ইউরোপীয় দেশগুলিতে।
সেই দেশেতে রোগটি এসেছিলো এক দর্জির সূত্র ধরে যা শীগ্রই মহামারী আকার ধারণ করে প্রায় ২৫০ জনের প্রাণ কেড়ে নেয়।গ্রামপ্রধান শীগ্রই ব্যাপারটি বুঝতে কঠোর ভাবে কোয়ারেন্টাইন পালনের কথা নির্দেশ দেন।তারফলে কেউ সে সময় গ্রামের বাইরে বা বাইরে থেকে কেউ সে গ্রামে আসতে পারতো না।সে সময়তে তারা ভিনিগার মেশানো জলে বিভিন্ন জিনিসকে জীবাণুমুক্ত করে নিতো।এইরূপ কঠোর বিধি ১ বছর ধরে পালন করায় পরিস্থিতি স্বাভাবিক হয়।
