Salton River

Today we will tell the story of a river that was born and died in the hands of our human society. There are many instances in the world where the river has lost its importance or its name has disappeared forever for the development of human civilization like the Los Angeles and Salt rivers in America.But this river has not been created by nature, but in the hands of human beings.you are right, the river was artificially created and it was the Salton river in California.

In fact, the river was created artificially by cutting a canal from the Colorado River. Farming and tourism flourished around this river in a very natural way.It is seen that various migratory birds and animals also came in this Salton river.Many locals even farmed fish with the water of this river.

But the local administration decides to build a dam on the Colorado River to prevent flooding,and that is when the river's plight begins.Although floods can be prevented by building dams, the inflow of rainwater into the Salton river was stopped.The stagnant water evaporates and dries up because there was no new way for fresh water to flow.As a result, fish die due to lack of water and so does the number of birds. As the water becomes saline, it becomes unfit for cultivation.

As a result, the river once filled with water dried up and the bodies of the fish and animals in the water decomposed and created a toxic environment which resulted in the evacuation of the settlements built around this river.Now the river has become a tragic river in history with its broken heart.

আসুন আজ আমরা এক নদীর গল্প করবো যার জন্ম ও মৃত্যু আমাদের মানব সমাজের হাতেই হয়েছে।এমনিতে পৃথিবীতে এরকম অনেক নজির আছে যেখানে নদী তার গুরুত্ব হারিয়েছে অথবা মানবসভ্যতার উন্নয়নের জন্য তার নাম চিরতরে বিলুপ্ত হয়েছে যেমন আমেরিকার লস এঞ্জেলস ও সল্ট নদী ।কিন্তু আমাদের এই নদীটির জন্ম প্রকৃতির হাতে নয়,তা মানুষেরই হাতে।ঠিকই ধরেছেন,নদীটি কৃত্তিমভাবে তৈরী ও তা ক্যালিফোর্নিয়ার সাল্ট্ন নদী ।  

আসলে কলোরোডা নদী থেকে খাল কেটে কৃত্তিমভাবে এই নদী তৈরি করা হয়েছিল।খুব স্বাভাবিক নিয়মে এই নদীটিকে কেন্দ্র করে চাষাবাদ ও পর্যটনের প্রসার ঘটে।দেখা যায় বিভিন্ন পরিযায়ী পাখির ও প্রাণীর আগমন।এমনকি অনেকে এই নদীর জল দিয়ে স্থানীয় মানুষেরা মাছ চাষও করতো ।

 

কিন্তু প্রতি বছর বন্যা রুখতে স্থানীয় প্রশাসন কলোরাডো নদীতে বাঁধ তৈরীর সিদ্ধান্ত নেয় এবং তার পরেই শুরু হয় এই নদীর দুর্দশা।বাঁধ তৈরী করে বন্যা রোধ করা গেলেও সাল্ট্ন নদীতে বর্ষার জল ঢোকা বন্ধ হয়ে যায়।জমে থাকা জল বাষ্প হয়ে শুকাতে থাকে কারণ নতুন করে জল আসার কোনো রাস্তা থাকে না।ফলে মাছ জলের অভাবে মরতে থাকে,পাখীর সংখ্যাও থাকে।জল লবনাক্ত হয়ে যাওয়ায় তা চাষেরও অযোগ্য হয়ে যায়।

ফলে এক সময়ের জলে পরিপূর্ণ নদী শুকিয়ে যায় ও জলের মাছ ও  প্রাণীদের দেহ পচে গিয়ে এক বিষাক্ত পরিবেশের সৃষ্টি করে যার ফলে এই নদীকে কেন্দ্র করে গড়ে ওঠা জনবসতি অন্যত্র সরিয়ে নেওয়া হয়।এখন সেই নদী তার ভগ্নদশা নিয়ে ইতিহাসে এক ট্র্যাজিক নদীতে পরিণত হয়েছে।
