Palwankar Balu,the spin founder
Today we all know that cricket is the most popular sport in our country. We can easily guess the level of passion and support of Indians in this game. In this country, some cricketers have also been born who, despite showing enough skills in their time, did not get the respect they deserved, but received only humiliation and mental anguish.
Palayankar Balu was one of the few Indian cricketers to receive such discriminatory treatment from co-players just for being of the lower caste class determined by the upper class. In India, Jr. Gregg, a famous English cricketer of that time, was the first to find his talent. He used to get bold many times by the spin bowling of Balu but he couldn't solve the secret even after trying a lot. Palayankar Balu was only 16 years old then and incidentally the bowling of that teenager took him by surprise.
However, the popularity of Palayankar Balu continued to grow. Many provincial cricket team of that time also recognized his talent and they also knew that having a spin cricketer like Balu was the asset of any team. But all those teams were full of racism so the teammates were reluctant to play with him. So when giving him the ball, they would move the ball forward with their feet instead of hands so that they did't get touch of him. Not only that, he had to eat alone during the lunch break of the game and he had to wash his own dishes. But he had an strong mind. So in spite of many humiliations and mental anguish, he earned enough respect from the English in his professional life. Unfortunately, he retired before India's first Test debut in 1932.
Today we call the world famous spin maker Bishan Singh Bedi, Erapalli Prasanna, Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh etc, though the arrival of spin bowling in India took place through his hands. Although he has remained hidden from history, perhaps it is also a kind of social untouchability that we have always avoided.

আজ আমরা সকলেই জানি যে আমাদের দেশে ক্রিকেট হলো সবচেয়ে জনপ্রিয় খেলা।এই খেলায় ভারতবাসীর আবেগ ও সমর্থন যে কী পর্যায়ে আছে তা আমরা খুব সহজেই অনুমান করতে পারি।এই খেলায় একবার নাম করতে পারলে যে সন্মান ও অর্থপ্রাপ্তি হয় তা আজ যথেষ্ট ঈর্ষণীয়।কিন্তু জানেন কী, এই দেশেই এমন কিছু ক্রিকেটের জন্মেছেন যারা নিজেদের সময়ে যথেষ্ট দক্ষতা দেখানো সত্ত্বেও যোগ্য সন্মান পান নি,পেয়েছেন শুধু লাঞ্ছনা ও মানসিক যন্ত্রনা।
পালয়ঙ্কর বালু হলেন এমনই এক ভারতীয় ক্রিকেটার যিনি দেশীয় খেলোয়াড়দের কাছ থেকে এইরকম বৈষম্যমূলক আচরণ পেয়েছিলেন শুধু উচ্চশ্রেণীর দ্বারা নির্ধারিত নিচু চামার শ্রেণীর হওয়ার জন্য।এনার কিন্তু ক্রিকেট প্রতিভার বিকাশ পরাধীন ভারতবর্ষে জেজি গ্রেগ নামক সেইসময়ের বিখ্যাত ইংরেজ ক্রিকেটারের হাত ধরে এবং তাও বেশ মজার।আসলে সেই সময়ে পালয়ঙ্কর বালু মাত্র ১৬ বছরের কিশোর ও ঘটনাচক্রে সেই কিশোরের বোলিং তাকে বিস্বিত করেছিল।বিশেষ করে একজন ক্রিকেট প্রশিক্ষণহীন কিশোরের 'স্পিন' বোলিংয়ের কাছে তিনি বহুবার বোল্ড হয়ে যেতেন।জেজি গ্রেগ বহু চেষ্টা করেও এর রহস্য বার করতে পারেন নি ।
যাই হোক ধীরে হলেও পালয়ঙ্কর বালুর পরিচিতি বাড়তে থাকলো।সেই সময়ের বর্ণহিন্দুদের ক্রিকেট দলও তার প্রতিভার পরিচয় পেয়েছিলো এবং তারা এও জানতো যে বালুর মতন স্পিন ক্রিকেটার পাওয়া যেকোনো দলের সম্পদ।কিন্তু সহখেলোয়াড়রা তার সঙ্গে খেলতে নারাজ।তাই তাকে বল দেওয়ার সময় হাত দিয়ে না দিয়ে পা দিয়ে বল এগিয়ে দিত যাতে তাদের জাত চলে না যায়।শুধু তাই নয়,খেলার লাঞ্চ বিরতির সময় তাকে একাই খেতে হতো ও সেই বাসনও তাকে ধুয়ে রাখতে হতো।কিন্তু অসম্ভব মনের জোর ছিল তার।তাই অনেক লাঞ্ছনা ও মানসিক যন্ত্রণার মধ্যেও তিনি তার পেশাদারী জীবনে নাক উঁচু ইংরেজদের কাছে যথেষ্ট সমীহ আদায় করেছিলেন।দুর্ভাগ্যের বিষয় হলো যে ভারতের ১৯৩২ সালের প্রথম টেস্ট অভিষেকের আগেই তিনি অবসর নিয়েছিলেন।
আজ আমরা বিশ্বখ্যাত স্পিনের কারিগর বলতে বিশন সিংহ বেদি,এরাপল্লী প্রসন্ন,অনিল কুম্বলে ,হরভাজন সিংহ প্রমুখ নাম নিয়ে থাকি যদিও ভারতে স্পিন বোলিংয়ের আগমন তার হাত দিয়ে হয়েছিল।যদিও তিনি ইতিহাসের আড়ালেই থেকে গেছেন,হয়তো এও এক ধরণের সামাজিক অস্পৃশ্যতা যা আমরা সবসময়েই এড়িয়ে চলি।
