Hippopotamus in Columbia
We are all forced to agree on one thing today that the world is going through a hard time today. I am not saying this for the post covid-19 situation, but it is easy to understand that nature is not pleased with our various activities.The news, especially to environmentalists, who are always protesting against the indiscriminate killing of various animals, are also being forced to take a ruthless decision to maintain the balance of the environment or ecosystem.
For those who haven't heard the name of infamous Pablo Escobar, let me tell you that he was a Colombian terror, the mafia to whom murder, kidnapping and animal poaching were just a simple matter.So that Pablo Escobar unknowingly became the 'timebomb' of the ecosystem.He was the prime responsible person for the abundance of hippopotamus in Colombia today, which is upsetting the balance of the environment.
The incident began in the late seventies when Pablo Escobar was a master of wildlife smuggling.
He even built a whole zoo in his own house, and he built a wildlife sanctuary in that zoo. Later, he would sell them in the smuggled market with huge price. This is how it went for a long time, but Pablo Escobar, the most wanted man in the police record, was found dead in 1993 in a covert operation.After then it was possible to release all the animals from his zoo to different places, except 4 hippos.There was no place found for their suitable replacement. Finally, relying on luck the local administration decided to released them in the jungles of Colombia.
It was thought that they would die in a very short time in a hostile environment. But to everyone's surprise, the number has increased from 4 to 120. Environmentalists fear that if this continues, the number will soon rise to 1,400 and that's where their fears run high.It can have an adverse effect on the local ecosystem.So we have to make a difficult decision to kill the 30 hippopotamus in a year to maintain the balance of the ecosystem.
That's why I was saying that today is a very bad time for the world, otherwise these hippopotamuses would not have been killed in this way to protect the ecosystem of the environment.

আমরা সকলে আজ একটা কথা একবাক্যে মানতে বাধ্য যে পৃথিবীর আজ বড়ই দুঃসময় চলছে।একথা আমি এই covid-১৯ পরবর্তী দুঃসময়ের জন্যই বলছি তা নয়,ভালো করে পর্যবেক্ষণ করে দেখলে সহজেই বোঝা যায় যে প্রকৃতি আমাদের নানা কীর্তিকলাপে ভয়ানকভাবে রুষ্ট।এরই মধ্যে আবার একটি মন খারাপের খবর বিশেষ করে পরিবেশবিদদের কাছে যারা বিভিন্ন পশুদের নির্বিচারে হত্যা করাকে প্রতিবাদ করে থাকে তাদেরও আজ সেই পরিবেশের ভারসাম্য রক্ষা করতে এক নির্মম সিদ্ধান্ত নিতে বাধ্য হচ্ছে।ব্যাপারটা একটু বুঝিয়ে বলি ।
কুখ্যাত পাবলো এসকোবার নাম যারা শোনেননি তাদের জন্যে বলে রাখি,যে ইনি হলেন কলম্বিয়ার ত্রাস তথা মাফিয়া যার কাছে খুন,অপহরণ ও পশুর চোরা শিকার করা জলভাত।তো সেই পাবলো এসকোবার নিজের অজান্তেই হয়ে উঠেছিলেন বাস্তুতন্ত্রের 'Timebomb'। কারণ তার জন্যই আজ কলম্বিয়ায় জলহস্তীর আধিক্য দেখা গেছে যা পরিবেশের ভারসাম্য নষ্ট হতে বসেছে।
ঘটনার সূত্রপাত সাতের দশকের শেষের দিকে যখন পাবলো এসকোবার বন্যপশুর চোরাচালানে সিদ্ধহস্ত।
এমনকি নিজের বাড়ীতেই আস্ত এক চিড়িয়াখানা তৈরী করে ফেলেছিলো,এবং তিনি তার সেই চিড়িখানায় বন্যপশুর আস্তানা গড়ে তুলেছিলেন।পরে সুযোগ বুঝে তা চোরাই বাজারে বিক্রী করে দিতেন।এভাবেই চলছিলো বেশ,কিন্তু পুলিশের খাতায় মোস্ট ওয়ান্টেড তক্মাপ্রাপ্ত পাবলো এসকোবার হদিস পেয়ে ১৯৯৩ সালে এক গোপন অভিযানে তাকে হত্যা করা হয়।তারপর তার চিড়িয়াখানা থেকে সমস্ত পশুদের বিভিন্ন জায়গায় পাঠিয়ে দেওয়া সম্ভব হলেও ৪টি জলহস্তীকে কোথাও পাঠানো সম্ভব হয়নি।শেষে তাদের কিছুটা ভাগ্যের উপর ভরসা করে কলাম্বিয়ার জঙ্গলে ছেড়ে দেওয়া হয়।
ভাবা হয়েছিল যে প্রতিকূল পরিবেশে তারা খুব কমসময়ের মধ্যেই মারা যাবে।কিন্তু সকলকে অবাক করে তাদের বংশবিস্তারে সংখ্যাটা ৪ থেকে ১২০তে বৃদ্ধি পেয়েছে।পরিবেশবিদদের আশঙ্কা এভাব চললে পরে খুব দ্রুত সংখ্যাটা ১৪০০তে চলে যাবে,এবং সেখানেই তাদের ভয়।তাদের আশঙ্কা জলহস্তীর এই বাড়তে থাকা সংখ্যা বাস্তুতন্ত্রের উপর প্রতিকূল প্রভাব ফেলতে পারে।তাই কিছুটা বাধ্য হয়েই বাস্তুতন্ত্রের ভারসাম্য রক্ষা করতে বছরে ৩০টা করে জলহস্তী মেরে ফেলার কঠিন সিদ্ধান্ত নিতে হচ্ছে ।
তাই বলছিলাম যে পৃথিবীর আজ বড়ই দুঃসময় ,নাহলে পরিবেশের বাস্তুতন্ত্র রক্ষা করতে এই জলহস্তীদের এইভাবে মেরে ফেলার দরকার ছিল না।আপনাদের কী মত জানাবেন এই আশা রেখে শেষ করলাম।
