Today is the 24th of July. But this day is not only seen as an ordinary day by the bengalees,but also a mournfull day.we lost a great soul of our bengali film industry today.Today, almost a 4 decades after the incident, he is still the favorite hero of dreams in the corner of every bengali mind.He is still the ultimate form of romanticism for bengalees and its culture. Let's try to look at different aspects of everyone's favorite 'Uttam Kumar'.
The star was born on September 3, 1926 in an ordinary family. In the early stages of life, he went through severe financial difficulties. So, after finishing his studies, he had to start earning money.
In his early life he worked as a clerk in the Calcutta Port Trust. But he was not only passionate of being a simple serviceman like the average bengalees, his goal was more big. Although he acted for some films from 1948-1952, no film was a commercial success. He was better known as 'Flop Master' in the bengali film industry then.
But the hugely successful film 'Sare Chuattar' in 1953 brought another dimension to his fortune and Bengali film history. He never had to look back after that. He acted in a total of 212 films from 1947-1980. In all the Indian films, especially in the bengali film world, a number of his films have shown his brilliant acting. But like many others, I too think he became known in the world for his film 'Nayak' directed by world famous director Satyajit Ray.Yes,the legend director himself thought about the film for casting Uttam Kumar as the lead role.whatelse could be a bigger achievement in the life of an actor?
Although he had no disputes with anyone for professional reasons, the practice of excellence in acting with Soumitra Chatterjee, another legend actor in the Indian film industry and a favorite actor of Satyajit Ray, is one of the topics of conversation among us.Although personally the two were respectful of each other.
Not only in acting, he later directed films, composed music and produced several films. Not only that, he also wrote two screenplays based on short stories. He also acted in hindi films but he could not succeed there due to linguistic reasons. At the age of only 53 in the year 1980 on this day, he left us and rested to the land of eternal peace.

আজ ২৪শে জুলাই ।তবে আজকের এই দিনটিকে শুধু একটি দিন হিসাবে আপামর বাঙালী দেখে না ,বরং রোমান্টিক বাঙালীর কাছে আজকের দিনটিতে চলচিত্র জগতের এক ইন্দ্রপতন ঘটে।আজ প্রায় ৪ দশক অতিবাহিত সেই ইন্দ্রপতনের ঘটনার পর,তা সত্ত্বেও বাঙালীর মনের কোণে আজও তিনি স্বপ্নের প্রিয় নায়ক।আজও তিনি বাঙালীর কাছে রোমান্টিওকতার চূড়ান্ত রূপ।হ্যাঁ,আপনারা ঠিকই ধরেছেন আজ আমরা আমাদের সকলের মহানায়ক সবার প্রিয় 'উত্তম কুমার' বিভিন্ন জানা দিকগুলি নতুন করে দেখার চেষ্টা করি।
৩রা সেপ্টেম্বর ১৯২৬ সালে এক সাধারণ পরিবারে এই নক্ষত্রের জন্ম হয়।জীবনের প্রথম পর্যায়ে প্রবল আর্থিক অনটনের মধ্যে দিয়ে কাটে ।তাই পড়াশুনা শেষ করার পরেই উপার্জনের পথে পা বাড়াতে হয়।
প্রথম জীবনে তিনি কলকাতা পোর্ট ট্রাস্টের কেরানি পদে চাকরী করতেন।কিন্তু তিনি তো গড়পড়তা বাঙালীর মতন শুধু চাকুরী বিলাসী ছিলেন না,ওনার লক্ষ্য ছিল অনেক বড়।তাই তিনি প্রথমে থিয়েটারে অভিনয় করতে করতেই স্টুডিওপাড়ার সঙ্গে যোগসূত্র হয়।তার সূত্র ধরেই ১৯৪৮-১৯৫২ পর্যন্ত বেশ কিছু ছবি করলেও কোনো ছবি বাণিজ্যিক ভাবে সফল হয়নি ।বরং ততদিনে বাংলার ফিল্ম জগতে 'ফ্লপ মাস্টার' নাম বেশি পরিচিত।
কিন্তু ১৯৫৩ সালে 'সাড়ে চুয়াত্তর ' প্রবলভাবে সফল ছবি ওনার ভাগ্যকে এবং বাঙালীর চলচ্চিত্র ইতিহাসে এক অন্য মাত্রা এনে দেয়।এরপর ওনাকে আর পিছনে ফিরে তাকাতে হয়নি ।১৯৪৮-১৯৮০ পর্যন্ত তিনি মোট ২১২ টি ছবিতে অভিনয় করেন।সবকটি ভারতীয় ছবিতে,বিশেষ করে বাংলার চলচ্চিত্র জগতে তার অভিনীত বেশ কিছু ছবি তার উজ্জ্বল অভিনয়ের পরিচয় দেয় ।কিন্তু অনেকের মতন আমারও মনে হয় যে জগৎ বিখ্যাত পরিচালক সত্যজিৎ রায়ের পরিচালনায় অভিনীত 'নায়ক' ছবির মধ্যে দিয়েই তার বিশ্ব পরিচিতি হয়।ছবিটি ১৬তম বার্লিন আন্তর্জাতিক চলচ্চিত্র উৎসবে ' গোল্ডেন বেয়ার' পুরস্কারে ভূষিত করা হয়।স্বয়ং পরিচালক তার কথা ভেবেই ছবিটির কথা ভাবেন।এর থেকে আর বড় প্রাপ্তি একজন অভিনেতার জীবনে কী হতে পারে?
পেশাগত কারণে কারোর সঙ্গেই ওনার কোনোরকম বিরোধ না থাকলেও ভারতীয় চলচ্চিত্র জগতের আরো এক দিকপাল অভিনেতা তথা সত্যজিৎ রায়ের প্রিয় অভিনেতা সৌমিত্র চট্টোপাধ্যায়ের সঙ্গে অভিনয়ের শ্রেষ্ঠত্ব নিয়ে চর্চা বাঙালীর আড্ডার এক অন্যতম বিষয়।যদিও ব্যক্তিগত ভাবে দুজনই ছিলেন পরস্পরের প্রতি শ্রদ্ধাশীল।
শুধু অভিনয় নয়,পরবর্তীকালে ছবি তিনি পরিচালনা ,সংগীত পরিচালক ও প্রযোজনা করেন বেশ কয়েকটি ছবিতে।শুধু তাই নয় তিনি ছোট গল্প অবলম্বনে দুটি চলচ্চিত্র চিত্রনাট্যও লিখেছিলেন।তিনি হিন্দি সিনেমাতেও অভিনয় করেছিলেন কিন্তু ভাষাগত কারণে তিনি সেখানে সফল হতে পারেননি।এই বিরল প্রতিভা মাত্র ৫৩ বছর বয়সে ১৯৮০ সালের আজকের দিনটিতে আমাদের ছেড়ে চিরশান্তির দেশে পাড়ি দেন।
