The image above is a huge collection of photographs, located about 200 feet below in a limestone mine not far from New York. It all started with Otto Batman of Germany. He was a librarian by profession and was addicted to collecting pictures. He later became known as 'The Picture Man'.

Although he was not American by birth, he moved to the United States with two trunks of expensive photographs to escape Nazi persecution .After coming to New York, his obsession with collecting these pictures increased. Moreover, at that time, the special demand for photography in America also increased, as a result of which the volume of his collection also increased.

In 1995, the famous American millionaire Bill Gates bought the rights to all the pictures he collected. At that time the number of his collected pictures stood at 1 crore 10 lakhs. Although Otto Batman himself never visited the museum because he died within 3 years. But in order to save the pictures in the changing climate of New York, they were transferred to the limestone mine because the normal temperature in the mine does not change. As a result, the pictures remained good. At present, there were about 10 crore pictures in this museum. The museum covers an area of about ​​10 thousand square feet. At present, this museum is a tourist attraction.

আমরা সকলেই জানি মাটির নিচে অনেক মূল্যবান সম্পদ রয়েছে এবং তা প্রতিনিয়ত মানব সভ্যতার বিকাশে উত্তোলিত হয়ে চলেছে।আজ আমরা মাটির নিচে এমন এক সম্পদের  উল্লেখ করবো যা হয়তো মানব সভ্যতার উন্নয়নে সরাসরি কাজে লাগে না ,তবু মানব সমাজের বুকে নানা ঘাতপ্রতিঘাত ছবি তুলে ধরে।তবে এ জায়গায় যেতে গেলে শুধু অনুমতিপত্র থাকলেই  চলবে না,বিশেষ ভাবে তৈরী হয়ে যেতে হবে।বুঝতে পারছেন না তো, আমি কোন সম্পদের কথা বলছি?আসুন তাহলে একটু বিস্তারিত ভাবে বলা যাক।   

উপরের যে ছবিটি দেখা যাচ্ছে তা হলো ছবির এক বিশাল সংগ্রহসালা যা নিউ ইয়র্ক থেকে বেশ দূরে একটি চুনাপাথরের খনি মধ্যে প্রায় ২০০ ফুট নিচে রাখা আছে।শুরুটা হয়েছিল খুব সাধারণভাবে জার্মানির ওত্তো বেটম্যানের হাত ধরে।তিনি ছিলেন পেশায় একজন লাইব্রেরিয়ান এবং নেশা ছিল ছবি সংগ্রহের।পরবর্তীকালে তিনি পরিচিত হন 'দ্যা পিকচার ম্যান ' রূপে।

তবে তিনি জন্মসূত্রে মার্কিনি ছিলেন না কিন্তু নাৎসি অত্যাচার থেকে রেহাই পেতে তিনি দু ট্রাঙ্ক ভর্তি দুর্মূল্য ছবি নিয়ে আমেরিকায় চলে আসেন।নিউ ইয়র্কে আসার পর তার এই ছবি সংগ্রহের নেশা আরো বেড়ে যায়।তাছাড়া সেই সময়ে আমেরিকাতেও ফটোগ্রাফির বিশেষ চাহিদা বাড়ে ফলে তার সংগ্রহের আয়তনেও বৃদ্ধি পায়।

  

সমাজের আশেপাশে ঘটে যাওয়া নানা উল্লেখযোগ্য ছবি ঠাঁই পে তার সংগ্রহশালায়।১৯৯৫ সালে বিখ্যাত মার্কিন ধনকুবের বিল গেটস তার সংগ্রহীত সমস্ত ছবির সত্ত্ব কিনে নেন।ততদিনে তার সংগ্রহীত ছবির সংখ্যা দাঁড়ায় ১ কোটি ১০ লাখ। যদিও ওত্তো বেটম্যান নিজে কখনো তার এই সংগ্রহশালা দেখে যেতে পারেননি কারণ এর ৩ বছরের মধ্যেই তিনি মারা যান।কিন্তু নিউ ইয়র্কের বদলে যাওয়া আবহাওয়ায় ছবিগুলিকে বাঁচাতে এগুলি চুনাপাথরের খনিতে স্থানান্তরিত করা হয়।কারণ খনি অঞ্চলে সাধারণ তাপমাত্রার হেরফের হয়না।তাছাড়া চুনাপাথর থাকায় জলবায়ু সবসময় শুস্ক থাকে।ফলে ছবিগুলি ভালো থাকে।বর্তমানে প্রায় ১০ কোটি ছবি রাখা আছে এই সংগ্রহশালায়।সংগ্রহশালাটি ১০ হাজার বর্গ ফুট এলাকা জুড়ে আছে।বর্তমানে এই সংগ্রহশালাটি পর্যটকদের এক আকর্ষণ কেন্দ্র।তবে এখানে যেতে গেলে গরম পোশাক এবং শ্বাসকষ্ট আছে এমন ব্যক্তিদের ডাক্তারের অনুমতি কাছে রাখতে হবে।
